5 Mindful Practices for Beginners: Stage 4

rough diamond

Introduction to Mindful Practices and Inner Potential

Every human has a diamond inside them; their utterly unique true nature, their potential, which may have yet to be realized.

This diamond is an uncut and unpolished gemstone. Once a rough diamond is cut, which takes a long time because it is one of the most complex substances in the Universe, it is then polished by grinding away the top surfaces to reveal the incredibly pure and shiny stone below.

We can work on polishing away other rough substances from our diamonds in the course of life. Compassion and patience are the two most useful tools in dealing with others. It may take a lifetime to make your diamond shine brightly. This is hard but rewarding spiritual training.

You will meet many rough diamonds in your daily life. You can help to polish their diamonds, too.

Noticing and Overcoming Shortcomings Mindfully

First, you notice your shortcomings; then, you lovingly tell yourself you will overcome them. And so, with time and patience, you can succeed. This will give you immense joy. In this process, you cut away each facet of your rough diamond and then polish it to shine brightly. This is your radiance, which you can contribute to the world. It is also about harmony.

You may need help with the people around you who are troublesome. You can learn to be patient with them and constantly remind yourself that we each have a unique mind and live and think differently.

If you are compassionate with yourself, you are very well-disposed to be compassionate with others. You can smile in adversity if you are mindful and well-connected with your inner storehouse and diamond potential. It’s true what they say! A smile can change the world. So, take the opportunity to smile whenever you can, even at strangers.

A beautiful smile belies the most scintillating of diamonds inside.

Harnessing Mindfulness for Compassion and Connection

Connect with your mindful state, but this time while standing before a natural light source, if possible. Notice how your spine will lengthen by thinking of the crown of your head going up into the sky and the soles of your feet going down into the Earth. Use your mind like a laser to defy gravity.

Listening and deepening your breath will help you sense the Earth’s gravitational force, which we deal with daily.

Then sense your inner diamond, your limitless potential deep inside you, usually at the level of the heart. Feel its power and breathtaking luminosity.

When you feel it strongly, check your length and widen across your shoulders from the tip of one shoulder to the other. And smile.

Unleashing Your Inner Joy: Smiling from the Soul

The benefits of smiling are numerous:

  • Reduced blood pressure
  • Increased endurance
  • Reduced pain
  • Reduced stress
  • Strengthened immune system
  • Long Life

The Buddha is often seen smiling. Scholars say he smiles because he decided to teach the world about enlightenment rather than keep it all to himself. So, when I smile radiantly, even at strangers, I communicate with the whole world or global community.
